slyngven

2023

Cotton, acrylic paint

A threedimensional textile wall hanging sculpture, taking form as a big four edged ribbon bow.

The print of the textile varying in red and light pink colors, portrays an illustration of the morning glory plant. The flower only blooms in the morning. It is also a creeper, meaning a plant that wraps itself around whatever is around it to reach further up. That also means other plants and itself.

The artwork explores themes of female friendship, a part of life i’ve always found difficult to succeed in. Growing up and getting better at drawing boundaries i’ve found myself longing for the childhood idea of friends as something that lasts forever, even when you have no understanding of the concept of forever or how relationships change. The feeling of “BFF” becomes less frequent as an adult and i miss the childhood/teenage intensity of love between friends, while also enjoying my independence and being happy that i no longer owe anyone my entire life.

The title “slyngven” plays on the danish word “slyngveninde”, something you call young girls that have that very intense girlhood friendship where they never leave eachothers side. The word “slyng” is also used about creeper plants.
